POSTMODERNISM LECTURE NOTES: KEY POINTS

Postmodernism is a term that is "applied to a wide range of cultural analysis and productions since the 1970s". Postmodernism is used to refer to the era when the shift arose that this was taking over Modernism. With Art, Design and Architecture, Postmodernism was a come back to Modernism, and tried to out do it, hence the ever since battle between the two.

Key points of Postmodernism:
- acceptance of different styles, not just 'the modern'
- design and cultural chaos
- negativity
- social class and wealth were still regarded highly
- status conscious
- form doesn't necessarily follow function
- variety of materials and experiments used within design
- Bricolage
- no rules or guidelines
- quotes or mocks historical styles
- Juxtaposition - Barbara Kruger
